In our group is Emily McCanless, Patrick Jagielski, Michael Schreiber, Anderson McMaster, Page Wise and Sarah Jones. We chose a cartoon about the scare of drugs in tap water.
ReplyDeleteI. Drug Scare
a. Media Frenzy
b. over exaggeration
II. Image of the Elderly
a. Irony of the Caption
b. Awareness of tap water pollution
The comic presented, by Nate Beeler, makes the audience aware of a drug related problem in tap water sanitation. In the comic, there is a newspaper headline reading "prescription drugs found in tap water" which draws the readers attention to a media frenzy concerning the issue. Newspapers are a main way to communicate problems in the community, although sometimes things are over exaggerated in order to scare its readers. The comic showcases an elderly woman becoming excited over catching the pills from the "tap water". This image of her makes the audience aware of the issues associated with elderly health and the prescription drugs they need to take as a daily routine. It is also ironic that the woman is exclaiming "jackpot!" because prescription drugs found in tap water is something that, if anything, should provoke worry instead of excitement.
