Observation 2

Commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILVQaFYhBMg

Thesis: This television commercial revamps the average anti-tobacco commercial and delivers it in an entirely different way through the use of numerous rhetorical strategies which make for an unusually more effective message.

Observation 2

This commercial uses visual rhetoric and a celebrity to convince a young female audience of the effectiveness of a certain product.

Observation 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t-NAum8kY8

Thesis Statement:
In this video the author tries to convey the message that it is important to never give up and to always finish "the race" by using an emotional appeal with the father and son figures. The author uses pathos and narration to capture the audience and encourage the viewer to sympathize with the son and the obstacle he overcame.

Observation 2

This commercial for jockey underwear illustrates, through an appeal to ethos and pathos, how you could be happier by “daring to be you.” When the two young adults run out of the line, they are overcoming the societal ideal of being sexy and deciding to just be comfortable and happy with who they are.

Observation 2

Ad Website:
http://www.advertisementave.com/tv/ad.asp?u_player=mediaplayer&adid=526

This commercial shows Terry Tate as the "Office Linebacker," where he punishes employes for slacking on the job.  His version of punishment is tackling men and women when they do not do their job correctly or as quickly as they should.

Thesis:
The commercial for Reebok  uses many rhetorical devices and cannons such as narration and ethos to use as "attention getters" and to humor the audience.

Observation 2

This commercial, advertising Macs, is a commentary of America's fast paced lifestyle, focusing on the problems of Vista, being filled with useless information, causing it to be slow and crash frequently.

Observation 2

http://www.cagle.com/news/BafflingBritney/2.asp

(the second one down)

This cartoon is conveying a homeless mother with her two babies who are in Darfur. She is reading a newspaper with a headline reading "Britney" on the front. The woman is saying, “it must be hard being rich and famous” which is ironic for her to be saying. She has virtually nothing and is obviously struggling, but she is concerned with Britney Spears and her crazy life. This just shows that the lives of celebrities seem to be very important to everyone, when in reality there are much larger problems in the world that we should be concerned with.

Thesis: Gary Varvel uses a variety of rhetorical strategies, including pathos and illustration, to appeal to the audience's emotions and to demonstrate to the audience the importance of world issues and the unnecessary focus on celebrities.

Observation 2

The billboard for Nike uses many rhetorical strategies and cannons, such as illustration and process, to show how with Nike's new shoe, someone can run so fast that they can even run though walls.
Link: http://visualfunhouse.com/billboards/nike-run-through-the-wall-optical-illusion.html

Observation 2

In the movie Blood Diamond, rhetoric is applied through the use of pathos in order to evoke an emotional reaction in the viewers to potentially inform the public about blood diamond’s history in Africa and, hopefully, by informing the public through this film, diamond consumers will cease to purchase blood diamonds.

Observation 2

Ad website: http://www.adclassix.com/images/66marlborocountry.jpg

Thesis: This particular Marlboro advertisement uses various rhetorical strategies and cannons, including narration and pathos, to persuade their audience to indulge in the “flavor” that will apparently change them into a strong, young cowboy.

Observation 2

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SO95IO4sAc

Thesis: The dorritos commercial uses the main rhetoric strategy of ethos, using humor in an attempt to audience's attention by portraying an expected ending with an unexpected analogy of just how delicious the dorritos are by having a giant mouse attack the "hunter" for the dorritos.

Observation 2

The main focus of Rob Rogers' illustration is the underestimation of the proverbial "crunching" and "crashing" of the economy and welfare of the American citizens by the United States government.

The cartoon can be found at: http://cagle.msnbc.com/news/Recession08/1.asp

Observation 2

This is a commercial for Allstate, a car insurance company. It uses pathos to invoke an emotional response in the viewer who, hopefully, will then have a talk with their teenaged kid about safe driving. The man's voice in the commercial is an example of ethos, because the audience recognizes him as the man who is in all the Allstate commercials, and he's a very trustable person.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7U_EXEso0o
This State Farm commercial uses an analogy, ethos, and pathos to grab the audiences attention while at the same time selling their product and making the viewer assured that State Farm's insurance will always "be there".

http://www.thetruth.com/videos/
(I am doing the fourth video)

Thesis: The campaign against smoking cleverly uses a combination of rhetorical strategies and music in an effort to relay the message to the public about the dangerous contents of cigarettes and even goes as far as to claim that the tobacco companies are just using "tough love".

Observation 2

http://cagle.com/news/iPhone07/5.asp
(2nd cartoon on page)

For this assignment i used a cartoon about the iphone. It has a picture of the iphone with an alteration of the icons. The icons represent things that people aspire for.  Some include of an exit to war with Iraq, an end to global warming, universal health care, fair immigration, and a cure for cancer. The side of the cartoon says, "the only way the iphone can live up to the hype." This statement is expressing the over exaggerated publicity of the iphone.

Thesis: The cartoon regarding the iphone suggests that iphone advertisements use drastic exaggeration to persuade the audience so abundantly that it seems the product could perform society's greatest aspirations.

In Class discussion : "The american dream"

  1. The thesis of the paper: "Although the creators of this ad try to sell clothes by targeted placement, and visual ethos and pathos appeals, it is the emotional approach that dominates because it uses the powerful American dream of the modern woman to sell the product."
  2. The subject of the paper deals with female consumption as well as female "image" as a whole because women are the main consumers of clothing in America.
  3. How women are marketed to? How to achieve American dream? How the American Dream is portrayed through females?
  4. Models of ideal women are used to sell to women and catch their attention. Achieve happiness by following the American dream.
  5. Problem-Solution because it appeals to emotion and how they can attain the american dream.
Group: Anderson, Page, Sarah, Michael, Patrick, Amanda-Brooke and Emily

Example of visual rhetoric assignment

We chose the article by Christina Chen called "A Glimpse of our Crazyworld through the Lens of Truth: an insiders view at the truth campaign"

1.) The research subject is the way The Truth Campaign looks at tobacco companies.
2.) Crazyworld is a new way to effectively warn the public about the hazards of smoking.
3.) What strategies does Crazyworld use to persuade the pubic that smoking is dangerous.
4.) It uses pathos and logos with statistics and appeal to emotions
5.) They use the canon of rhetoric of invention and delivery because Crazyworld uses a new and different way to persuade against smoking. The article uses cause and effect and illustration to show the negative effects of smoking.

Rachel, Caitlin, Grace, Janine, Katie
1. The research subject is kids going off to college and the college acting as their parents.

2. This is a very relevant subject to millions of parents who have children in college around the world.

3. Why would the university want to look like they are taking over that role?

4. Because it is more reassuring to parents and students, especially freshmen. Parents worry a lot about their kids leaving home for the first time, and kid get homesick a lot because they probably haven't been away from home for an extended amount of time.

5.Pathos- because it appeals to the emotions of parents and students alike.
Illustration- it is going to show what a student's class room experiences will be like.
Description- it describes the emotional hardships that new college students could face.

Observation 2- Emily McCanless

Thesis: Steve Breen's cartoon, "National Retail Outlook", brings the issues declining retail and increasing unemployment rates to the forefront as a result of the economic decline in America, presenting a powerful argument that directly affects the American people in the process.
