Observation 4
Based on a countries religion, historical background, and political relation to the US, their media on 9/11 will differ.
2. Sources
There are going to be many different sources I can utilize to find information. First, using actual hard copies of newpapers or newspaper’s websites to find articles covering the event, or tv news media to find reports of coverage that day. Next, I can look through criticisms of those reports. Lastly, I can find previous research, journals, and database research on the topic.
3. Difficulties
Some possible difficulties I might encounter are problems with languages and this event happening a few years in the past. First, if I want to compare reports and opinions of different countries and many will not speak English. The two problems with this are that I might not be able to find that country’s reports in English; there might not be a translation. Second, if for instance, China has a Chinese news report and an English one, the English one might be intended for a different audience, therefore be biased.
My second problem might be that it is now 2009, and 9/11 happened in 2001. It may be difficult digging up 8 year old reports. I’m guessing that I’m going to have to sift through articles written in 2004 or 2005 recalling the events, even though I’m looking for articles directly after the event.
Anderson’s Comments:
Thesis:
Your thesis is clear and specific.
Sources:
You can look up speeches addressing 9/11 from political leaders from other countries
Difficulties:
For your first problem, you are going to need to try and find media reports in English or have English subtitles. Also, you can try and find someone that speaks that language and have them translate it.
For your second problem, you are going to have to do a good amount of research. However, it does help that 9/11 was such a major event so there will be a good bit of information.
Observation 4
2.)I am going to interview some students to see if their ideas are similar to my own or if their ideas are similar to other students that I am going to interview. These interviews will allow me to use quotes and information that students give me about their own ideas about the websites.
3.) Some students may lie about what they think about the websites. Also, some information that I get about websites could be incorrect.
Observation 4
2. For my research I plan to look at different websites such as PETA and animal outreach. I also plan to look up statistics and facts about the health and nutrient intake of vegetarians and how eating meat ensures that you get all of the nutrients, but nutrients are also availabe through vitamins and other supplements. I also plan to research the reasons people choose to be vegetarians by look through blogs and other websites.
3. I could encounter obstacles such as some of the statistics or "facts" that websites have not being correct or also not being able to find enough information to argue each side of the research topic.
Observation 4
2. I plan on using web sites, news reports, TV shows (such as Doctor Phil, The Tyra Banks Show, and other entertainment shows), and research articles (such as magazine articles, books and journals). I could even conduct a survey or search for a survey and analyze it.
3. I think it could be difficult to find a lot of material on the topic. But I think my largest obstacle is myself because I always have a tough time organizing my papers. To avoid this I intend to fully map out my paper by creating a specific outline before I begin my writing process.

Observation 4
For my research topic, I have decided to look into animal toxicology and experimentation in relation to the campaign against experimentation on animals. I think that the most important aspects of my paper will be discussing the different groups against animal testing, such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), and the effects of experimentation on the animals themselves. I believe that I will be including the arguments of those who are pro-animal testing and the multiple scientists and organizations that see no problem with experimentation on animals in order to provide the view from both sides of the argument. However, this will be strictly for informative purposes and I remain against animal experimentation.
I plan to use a variety of sources for my research information. There are many websites that deal with animal testing, both for and against it. For example, I will be researching PETA since they are a huge protestor against animal experimentation and have a few different organizations within PETA that I can find information on. Also, I will be looking for journal articles that discuss this topic, whether online or in the library.
I hope that I will not face many obstacles during this project, but I feel that it may be harder to find information on pro-animal testing and the positive effects of animal experimentation, rather than anti-testing which is a much larger campaign.
Observation 4
Preliminary thesis & ideas
For the research paper, I have decided that the ethicality animal experimentation should be my topic as I have done some previous research on the subject. Since I believe that animal experimentation and animal toxicology (the testing of chemicals and how they affect living systems) is unethical, I have decided to focus my paper on the campaign against animal experimentation. This includes, but its not limited to many organizations such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) and www.stopanimaltests.com (an smaller organization within PETA). I also believe I will give all perspectives of animal experimentation and use organizations that experiment with animals to make my argument stronger. One last focus, will be the government laws and acts passed to decrease animal testing. Animal experimentation is ethically wrong seen through government laws and acts, organizations against animal testing, and the records of animal experiments.
Research & sources
I intend to use the records of animal experiments from sources such as the NTP, or National Toxicology Program to show the harms and facts in testing. I also intend to use the PETA website and www.stopanimaltests.com as strong campaigns against animal experimentation. Many news articles also discuss the dangers in animal testing such as those from www.foxnews.com. News articles also discuss the laws and acts passed to reduce experimentation. Lastly, I plan to use the library database for journal articles discussing animal experimentation.
Obstacles
I do not see many obstacles in this project. I believe that my research will be thorough and not too hard.
Observation 4
The sources that I will be using in this research paper are the media, newspapers, databases, informational websites, and interviews. With media, I will be analyzing different posters that are issued by the Navy over the past century. I will also be analyzing different television ads, movies, and photos that are pro-Navy. With the source of the internet, I will show how websites now a days can be used to give information to people that are looking at facts about the Navy and what opportunities are available. The internet can also give me published personal accounts of people that have joined the Navy and what they are doing with the skills they have learned. Databases can give me the names of various journals, books, and articles that will give me research that has been previously done on the topic.
The difficulties that I am facing with writing this research paper is that I do not think I can find as many database sources as I would need.
Observation 4
2. The sources that I intend to use are the movies themselves, such as Wall-E, The Happening, and The Day the Earth Stood Still. I also plan to use articles written on these movies, such as movie reviews. I will research scholarly articles on the growing environmental crisis.
3. Some obstacles might be that these movies are relatively new, so there might not be a lot of information on them.
Observation 4
In my research papers the main sources that I will use are anti drug posters and commercials that are funded and released by the government. I will use anti drug campaigns that the majority of my peers are framiliar with and can recall throughout the years. This is an important part of my research paper because it will help my research paper relate to my peers who will be reading my paper.
The difficulties I may encounter while doing my research paper is finding research on which anti drug ads are the most or least effective.
Observation 4
The cartoon known as the Smurfs demonstrates a communist system in a positive light while simultaneously portraying capitalism in a negative light.
Sources:
I plan to watch lots and lots of Smurfs on youtube in the next few weeks in order to make direct observation from the cartoon to strangthen my argument. I also plan to use scholarly articles on communism and capitalism and use those to further back up my observations. Finally, I plan to reasearch if anyone else has made similar observations and compare those to mine to build evidence.
Obstacles:
I think it will be somewhat difficult to find direct scholarly sources relating to the Smurfs. Also, I feel that I will have trouble finding direct examples of how rhetoric is used to convey the message of my thesis. I have a few ideas, but need to further analyze the cartoon to find more examples.
Observation 4
2. As a source, I will use the library and find journal articles that address the issue of dress codes and uniforms. I will take information from my own knowledge of this topic. I wore uniforms for five years out of my education. I will discuss the observations i made through this time. I will take information from valid online sources to find the research others have done about the learning of students and how it is connected to their learning process. I will use interviews from people and learn about their opinions and the data they have found to back up their opinions.
3. I will find obstacles in the amount of research information that I will be able to find. It will be difficult to find book sources to back up the information that I find.
Observation 4- Abortion
2. There are many sources that I can use for this topic. I can use previous articles published in medical journals on the ethics of abortion, written by both abortion and non-abortion doctors. There are always newspaper articles concerning abortion, TV news reports, and hospital interviews. There are online databases that I can access that deal with abortion as well as abortion articles. I will be able to use the sources I find to support the rhetorical analysis I will do on the different posters/advertisements I choose to use.
3. While trying to find sources, I might find that certain topics have more research done on them than others. I might find alot of religiously-based articles that could be biased towards pro-life based on their personal beliefs. I think that it is important to find sources that support both pro-life and pro-choice but I do not know if there is adequate research for both sides.
observation 4
My research topic is trying to convince the audience that paying 3 million dollars for a 30 second super bowl is not worth it. I will focus mainly on how miller high life was smart and only paid for a 1 second ad and built up hype before the super bowl for the 1 second commercial and also compare the advertisement rates of other sporting major sporting events to that of the super bowl.
3 million dollars is not worth the 30 seconds of air time for commercials during the super bowl this year because it is still just a normal commercial that people watch for the comedy, not the product, so it would be much more efficient to spend the 3 million dollars on multiple commercials that are not aired during the super bowl.
2. Sources: I intend to use many different sources in this paper. I will use the internet to look up statistics for advertisements, read through articlas either published online or in the newspaper that talk about these super bowl commercials, and I will also use media and how they portray the super bowl and its advertisements.
3. Difficulties: The most difficult part of this project will be writing 2500 words. I also forsee some difficulties in finding the resources I need that will help me prove my argument.
Observation 4
I'm going to use Google and YouTube to find examples of rhetoric used to pursuade potential voters to choose Barack Obama over John McCain. I'm also going to see if Obama's official campaign site is still intact, because if it is, then it's probably a goldmine of material that I can analyze.
There is just so much visual rhetoric that I won't be able to analyze it all. This was a massive campaign, so I'm just going to have to focus on a few examples. Using these examples, I will try to accurately identify the overall campaign strategy, but obviously this is going to be a somewhat inexact science.
Observation 4
For my primary sources, I intend to use actual movies produced in the United States and compare them to the recent economic times. I shall do this by analyzing the movies, and then obtaining journals and newspapers from past times and finding their compatibility. I will also use journals analyzing the character of Batman, and past research in articles published about batman and his role in American History. I will use online articles written by the writers for DC comics, who publish over half of the superhero comics which includes Batman. These articles will be one of my largest resources as I can combine the actual comics Batman has been in, and compare his image to the reflections of the writers.
Some of the major difficulties I will be facing is the amount of interest in the topic, as not much research has been composed about Batman's image and reflection of the media and our economic times. A lot of polarized opinions may also come into play as I begin research for the topic, as many people have their favorite superhero and may not be inclined to write about Batman and his dominate role in American society.
Observation 4
Television media has changed over the decades since it began in the early part of the 1900s. For my research assignment I am going to observer commercial ads from several different decades in America and compare them to the ads that are shown today. I will also compare the different types of rhetoric used in the different time periods to what is the most effective today.
The sources I will use for this assignment will be mainly the commercials that I will obtain from the internet, preferably Youtube.com. To make a rhetorical analysis of the commercials, I will need the class English book as well. Other background information will be needed as well to explain what was going on in America at the time of the commercial. For example, a commercial set in the 1980s would need background on the Cold War.
I believe this topic is pretty straight up and not complicated. One of the difficulties will be analyzing each commercial, and finding true differences in them that reflect what was going in politically in the nation at the time. It is a lot that all ties in together. The background information will not be difficult to find, but those vintage commercials could pose a problem as they have become more and more rare with each passing decade.
Observation 4--Research Freewrite
1. In the first paragraph, introduce your research paper topic and describe what you think the main focus of the paper might be. Include a tentative thesis in this paragraph.
2. In the second paragraph, discuss the sources that you intend to use.
3. In the third paragraph, speculate on what obstacles you foresee in this project and/or what you anticipate to be the most difficult part of the assignment.
If appropriate, you might want to use an image to complement your written text. Pick an image that makes an argument or represents the focus of your project. Examine the sample student writing to see how you can use an image rhetorically.
When you are done, show your answers to your instructor or your peers for feedback.
