(the second one down)
This cartoon is conveying a homeless mother with her two babies who are in Darfur. She is reading a newspaper with a headline reading "Britney" on the front. The woman is saying, “it must be hard being rich and famous” which is ironic for her to be saying. She has virtually nothing and is obviously struggling, but she is concerned with Britney Spears and her crazy life. This just shows that the lives of celebrities seem to be very important to everyone, when in reality there are much larger problems in the world that we should be concerned with.
Thesis: Gary Varvel uses a variety of rhetorical strategies, including pathos and illustration, to appeal to the audience's emotions and to demonstrate to the audience the importance of world issues and the unnecessary focus on celebrities.
The subject is interesting and the thesis is well written. However, I am not sure that the cartoon has enough ideas and information to convey in a large paper. Maybe you choose a different subject or find more concepts of visual rhetoric implied by the cartoon.
